The Role
Volunteer Passenger Escorts play a vital role in ensuring the safe, comfortable and enjoyable operation of passenger trips. Working alongside the Driver, Passenger Escorts help create a welcoming, friendly environment and support passengers throughout their journey.
Passenger Escorts are typically associated with a local division near where they live, although some volunteers may choose to support multiple divisions on a regular or standby basis.
Each Village Hub manages its own trip schedule, with one Driver and one Passenger Escort assigned to each journey. Rostering is based on volunteer availability and preferences. Before each trip, crew members receive passenger information and journey details to help ensure the smooth running of the service.
Key Responsibilities
During and immediately after a trip, the Passenger Escort will:
- Work with the Driver to create a friendly, enjoyable atmosphere during journeys.
- Be familiar with the vehicle layout & safety features (emergency exits, seat belts, etc).
- Welcome passengers to the trip and ensure they board the vehicle safely.
- Ensure passengers are aware of relevant safety information and requirements.
- Ensure passenger seatbelts are correctly fitted, and personal belongings secured.
- Collect and accurately record payments (fares, donations, and membership fees, etc).
- Maintain an accurate record of any authorised expenses incurred during the trip.
- Ensure passengers are aware of the destination meeting point & return time.
- Provide passengers with an appropriate means of contacting the Passenger Escort.
- Ensure passengers and their belongings are safely returned to their homes.
- Assist the Driver in managing any emergencies that may occur whilst out on a trip.
- Promote upcoming trips to passengers and explain the booking procedure.

Role Requirements
Passenger Escorts should be able to:
- Safely enter and exit the vehicle, including using steps where required.
- Provide practical assistance to passengers when boarding, & alighting the vehicle.
- Assist with the safe stowage of passenger belongings, including mobility aids.
- Carry out the responsibilities of the role in a considerate manner; demonstrating empathy.
