Volunteer Driver Role

This role is responsible for safely transporting passengers on minibus trips and working with the Passenger Escort to ensure passengers have an enjoyable and comfortable experience.

Drivers are typically associated with a local division near where they live, although some volunteers may choose to support multiple divisions on a regular or standby basis.

Each Village Hub manages its own trip schedule, with one Driver and one Passenger Escort assigned to each journey. Rostering is based on volunteer availability and preferences. Before each trip, crew members receive passenger information and journey details to help ensure the smooth running of the service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out vehicle safety checks before trips.
  • Plan routes for passenger pick-ups and drop-offs.
  • Drive safely, legally, and considerately.
  • Refuel vehicles when required.
  • Complete driver logs and report any issues, incidents, or concerns.
  • Calmly manage incidents or emergencies and contact assistance when needed.
  • Work closely with the minibus Passenger Escort to:
    • Assist passengers boarding and leaving the vehicle
    • Ensure seatbelts are fitted correctly
    • Securely stow shopping bags and mobility aids
    • Work with the Driver to create a friendly, enjoyable atmosphere during journeys.

Skills and Qualities Required

  • Confidence driving minibuses or larger passenger vehicles. Previous experience is not mandatory.
  • Caring, friendly, and community-focused attitude.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Commitment to supporting residents.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Aged 25–78 for passenger-carrying duties.
  • Hold a valid driving licence.
  • Be eligible to drive a minibus, usually requiring D1 entitlement.
  • Have current knowledge of the Highway Code.

(Drivers aged 79–81 may only drive vehicles for administrative purposes, not with passengers)
